TEMPERATURE AND PLASTIC VESSELS (PIPING AND TANKS)

The temperature that a vessel can take is directly linked to the pressure that is being applied in the vessel, whether by a pump or other source. There is often little appreciation as to how fast the allowable pressure falls-off as the temperature increases. Take a typical PVC pipe rated nominally at 16 Bar, where the rated or allowable pressure falls by 38% for just 20 degrees increase in temperature! How quickly the pipe becomes useless after such temperature rises is astounding! BUT…. if properly designed to cope with the right mix of temperature and pressure in any one plant, you can sure get a sound and long service from that pipe or indeed a tank of similar dimensions. It’s all in careful design and a sound understanding of the temperature effects on the pressure ratings!
